Abstract: | Dr. Marcel J. E. Golay was born in Switzerland and received the License of Electrical Engineer from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich in 1924. Golay then joined Bell Labs in the U.S. for four years before going to the University of Chicago where he received the Ph.D. in physics in 1931. He then joined the U.S. Army Signal Corps at Ft. Monmouth, NJ where he spent much of his career during WWII and thereafter. Dr. Golay was well known in the field of optical instrumentation; he was a consultant with and later employed by Perkin Elmer for many years where he improved the Golay Infra-Red Detector. Golay applied mathematics to many problems resulting in contributions to communication codes, error detecting and correction codes and other advances in electronics. Golay returned to the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich near the end of his life. |

Speaker’s Bio: | Robert D. (Bob) Hunter is a retired manager of regulatory compliance and consultant whose published books treat intellectual property (IP) from a management perspective (not a “how-to”). Bob was one of the founders of the IEEE Consultants organization and served as Chair of the Central Texas Section (1980). Bob is a Life Senior Member (LS) of the IEEE, a Life Member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and a Fellow of The Society for Standards Professionals (SES). Bob obtained BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering from Drexel University in 1959 and 1962, respectively. Bob was employed at Philco as a Patent Engineering Specialist for 12 years. |
