He presented a deeper dive into the benefits and challenges including: environmental safety, efficiency, cost &amp; integration into the grid. Eric presented study cases for past &amp; current nuclear failures, lessons learned along the way &amp; how these lessons have fostered new engineering philosophies of nuclear energy.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"sublabel\">Biography: \u00a0<\/span>Evan Rogers is an Electrical Engineer in Training with 7 years of experience under his belt in the power, research &amp; technology industry. During his academic studies at Texas Tech University, he spent a year researching an alternative material, Thorium, along with the energy yield Thorium provides &amp; the minimal enviormential impact it has. We enjoyed a delicious meal and dessert prepared by Chef John in the dining room of the Scottish Rite Theater in Austin. Who knew that an engineer could be so funny! Wine and other beverages were provided by the guests. We learned a lot about Romeo&#8217;s background and he hatd the entire group in stitches with his dry wit. First, Dr. Kamalasadan discussed\u00a0the status of the RER-integrated power system implementations in various parts of the US is discussed, followed by examples of the\u00a0\u00a0major challenges in the design and operation of 100%<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">RER-based electric power systems are illustrated. Further, the problems associated with maintaining the stability of the grid while integrating RERs, especially the angular, voltage, and frequency stability during normal operation, outages, and restoration phases will be addressed. Key issues are short circuit analysis and protection coordination, black start restoration, grid resilience, reliability, and electric vehicle integration will be some other key points of discussion. The talk followed with a review of the\u00a0major mitigation methods to circumvent some of the challenges to achieve a 100% RER-integrated electric grid are discussed, such as\u00a0local control, system-wide mitigation measures, network strengthening requirements, and the addition of grid support resources such as battery energy sources. He received his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Toledo, OH in 2004. His research interests include inverter-based resources modeling and integration, data-driven approaches to power grid modernization, smart grid, microgrid, power system operation and modernization, smart grid, microgrid, power system operation and optimization, and power system dynamics, stability, and control. Prof. Kamalasadan\u2019s research for the last 20 years has resulted in tools and methods that have a high-level impact on electric utility modernization<br \/>\nwith a fleet-wide deployment of his tools that enabled modern grid management and control towards 100% integration of renewable energy. His research work has secured more than $12M in grants and contracts notably from the US Department of Energy, National Science Foundation (NSF), Siemens Energy, Duke Energy Corporation, Schweitzer Engineering Lab, and several other industries. He is the chief architect of Duke Energy Smart Grid Laboratory at UNCC, a $5M facility. Prof. Kamalasadan has co-authored more than 250 refereed journal and conference articles and has received several awards from IEEE and NSF including the National Science Foundation CAREER award. #000000;font-size: 14pt\">About 25+ attendees attended as Yotta guides demonstrated <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">where the battery, the SolarLEAF, is manufactured, compiled, and tested. During the tour, attendees will had the chance to learn about the company&#8217;s history, mission, and vision for the future. They also had the opportunity to meet with knowledgeable staff and ask any questions they about their products, services, and more,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">Yotta Energy\u2019s SolarLEAF battery is a first of it&#8217;s kind DC-coupled battery, placed &#8220;panel-level,&#8221; directly under the PV modules. There are challenges to overcome, however. The number of locations where partial discharge analysis can be useful has increased by several orders of magnitude, which increases the cost of monitoring. Solutions need to consider the cost of failures (dollars, safety, outages, etc.) and the cost of the more widespread monitoring systems (equipment, deployment, maintenance, replacement).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bob Hebner is the Director of the Center for Electromechanics at the University of Texas at Austin.\u00a0 The Center power and energy technology, and teams with companies to get emerging technology into the market.\u00a0 Important current projects involve transportation electrification, growth of hydrogen in transportation and electric power, nano-dielectrics, and grid resiliency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Before joining the University of Texas, he spent many years at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).\u00a0 He also worked in the Office of Management and Budget, at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and at Sandia National Laboratory.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Throughout his career,\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Hebner\u00a0has been active technically having authored or coauthored more than two hundred technical papers and reports.\u00a0 He is a life fellow of the IEEE.\u00a0\u00a0 He spent three years as a member of the IEEE Board of Directors and has served as Chair of the Board of the Center for Transportation and the Environment.<\/p>\n<p><a speaker,\u00a0Ksenia Solomatina, founder\u00a0of PowerTechs, spoke about the challenges arising from\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000\">transitions towards a more sustainable and renewable energy future, specifically\u00a0the repurposing of the workforce from one set of work skills to a new set in the new eco-centered industries. \u00a0Analysis shows that the cost to retrain can be cheaper that the process to conduct staffing searches for new personnel. She discussed the main challenges and best practices associated with transitioning a workforce to the growing renewables sector. The transition necessitates the realignment of skills, knowledge, and experience from traditional energy industries to renewable technologies. Challenges arise from the need to bridge the skills gap, ensure a fair transition for affected workers, and address regional disparities in workforce capabilities. Additionally, the rapid evolution of renewable technologies requires continuous upskilling and reskilling efforts to meet changing industry demands. Best practices involve proactive planning and collaboration among governments, industries, and educational institutions. Policies that promote workforce transition, provide financial support, and facilitate training programs are crucial. An excellent example is that of workers in the coal fuel industries who will have fewer job opportunities as coal plants are phased out. It may apear that there is little similarity between the skills in the coal industry and the skills in the electric vehicle or solar plant construction and operations. The core skills of critical thinking, judgement, creativity and problem solving may be the same however. Determining and using those fundamental\u00a0skills to develop more specific skills in the new arena is a key to a successful transition.\u00a0Engaging affected communities, offering retraining opportunities, and fostering innovation in workforce development.
