Abstract:

Software-defined radios (SDRs) have transformed how we teach, learn, and practice modern wireless communications by providing a flexible, hands-on platform that bridges theory with real-world implementation. This talk presents a curated set of ten SDR-based experiments that have proven especially effective in engaging students and supporting practicing engineers. The focus will be on practical outcomes—how these experiments make abstract concepts tangible, accelerate skill-building, and highlight system-level tradeoffs in wireless design. Attendees will gain insight into how SDR experiments can serve as both a teaching tool and a professional resource for deepening expertise in next-generation communication systems.

Bio:

Murat Torlak is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at The University of Texas at Dallas. His research spans wireless communications, software-defined radio systems, and millimeter-wave sensing and imaging for next-generation networks. He has authored more than 140 peer-reviewed publications and led numerous projects on vehicular communications, UAV networking, and advanced sensing supported by industry and federal agencies. From 2020 to early 2025, he served as an NSF Program Director overseeing flagship wireless initiatives including PAWR and RINGS.
