Title: Grounding Transformers in the Power Grid: Design, Protection, and Best Practices
Summary:
This presentation will review the requirements and theory of grounding transformers. Grounding transformers are used throughout the power grid as a means to provide protective relaying visibility of ground faults. However, if installed incorrectly they can interfere with protection schemes, create excessive fault current, and allow excessive ground fault overvoltage. The review will include the system conditions that require a grounding transformer, symmetrical component theory, protection requirements, types of grounding transformers, and some examples.
