IEEE PES Fort Worth Monthly Meeting – May 19, 2026
May 19 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm CDT
For our May meeting, we are happy to welcome Drew Welton from Intellirent to come speak on Advanced Transformer Diagnostics.
Presentation:
Power transformers are among the most critical and expensive assets in electrical transmission and distribution networks. Despite their robust design and careful manufacturing processes, transformer failures continue to pose significant challenges to grid reliability, operational safety, and economic efficiency. Understanding the complex interplay of electrical, thermal, mechanical, and environmental stresses that lead to transformer failures is essential for developing effective testing protocols, maintenance strategies, and life extension programs. The consequences of transformer failure extend far beyond equipment replacement costs. Catastrophic failures can result in extended power outages affecting thousands of customers, safety hazards including fire and explosion risks, environmental contamination from oil spills, and damage to adjacent substation equipment. For testing professionals, comprehensive knowledge of failure mechanisms enables the development of more targeted diagnostic approaches and early warning systems that can prevent catastrophic events before they occur. In this session we will present some of the latest advanced diagnostic techniques designed to reduce premature failure, focusing on insulation, and mechanical failures.
Speaker Bio:
Drew Welton (IEEE Senior) is Vice President of Business and Technical Development, leading strategic growth initiatives by identifying new business opportunities, forging partnerships, and overseeing the development and implementation of technical solutions. This role bridges the gap between business strategy and technical execution, ensuring that technology investments align with overall business goals. Welton was previously the Vice President of Sales and Technical Services for Beckwith Electric, and North American Regional Manager for OMICRON electronics, starting in 1997. Prior to his career with OMICRON, Welton was a Regional Sales Manager with Beckwith Electric, and served as National Sales Director for Substation Automation with AREVA T&D. Welton has written numerous articles on substation maintenance testing and has conducted training sessions for substation technicians and engineers at utilities and universities across North America. He is a 30-year Senior Member of IEEE PES, IAS, and an active member of the Transformers Committee. He was the 2022 recipient of NETA’s Alliance Partner Award for outstanding contributions and has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Fort Lewis College, Durango, Colorado.
As with all of our meetings, we will be providing lunch. If you do not pay online beforehand, we will not be purchasing lunch for you. Please reach out if there are any issues with payment and we will try to figure it out prior to the meeting. In my experience, Paypal is the easiest and has had the least issues in the past.
Excited to see everyone on the 19th!
