Abstract:
Motorbus Transfer System Design & Application Considerations (Oct 14, 2025)
To maintain a critical process upon loss of primary motor bus power, industrial facilities & power plants depend largely on residual voltage transfer, ignoring phase angle and closing the backup source when the motor bus residual voltage has decayed to 30%. This presentation discussed the consequences of out-of-phase residual voltage transfers using a transient simulation program to model a bus with three motors of various sizes, inertias, and impedances, and calculates the peak transient motor current and torque upon closure of the backup source breaker. Individual motors exhibit positive and negative torques and they can impact the motor shaft stress. Other motor bus transfer schemes such as fast transfer, and in-phase transfer which reduce the peak motor current and torque without disrupting the process in most cases are also discussed. Design of a digital motorbus transfer scheme which incorporates fast, in-phase, and residual transfer schemes is discussed along with digital signal processing algorithms.
Power plant protection for industrial & utility applications (Oct 15, 2025)
Generator protection is crucial for power plants to prevent catastrophic failures, ensure the safety of personnel & equipment, and maintain grid stability by detecting and isolating faults quickly. Protection systems guard against equipment damage, minimizing downtime, extending asset life, and ensuring compliance with industry standards & regulations. Some of the topics covered include generator grounding, & connections, protection against internal faults, external faults and abnormal operating conditions. Protection as per IEEE, IEC and NERC PRC standards will be discussed in this presentation.
