IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference (GHTC)
IEEE GHTC focuses on technology for the benefit of humanity. This cross-disciplinary annual conference provides the perfect venue for those interested in humanitarian engineering to join their peers in October 2025 at the Colorado School of Mines, Golden, Colorado USA
The 15th IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference (IEEE GHTC 2025) is a flagship international conference sharing effective approaches, best practices, and practical and/or scholarly technology-enabled interventions that address the needs of underserved communities in resource-constrained environments around the world. This year IEEE GHTC 2025 will highlight and explore “Technologies in Context” as its annual theme. This theme encourages authors to assemble diverse teams including community members articulating the need and/or desire for technology, relevant policymakers, and/or interdisciplinary academic teams to describe their technological intervention in social, cultural, environmental, economic, and/or political contexts. Submissions should discuss work done and interventions designed to address resource-constrained and/or development contexts, build local capacity, promote local involvement through decolonial and critically conscious practices, provide educational opportunities and connectivity, and/or create equitable and just access to water, energy, and food with minimal negative impact on the planet and environment.

Region 5 Brings the Voice of Innovation to Washington at IEEE-USA Congressional Visits Day 2025

On April 8–9, 2025, IEEE Region 5 members joined over 300 engineers, technologists, researchers, and educators from across 39 states for the annual IEEE-USA
Congressional Visits Day (CVD) in Washington, D.C. Now in its 27th year, this flagship advocacy event brings IEEE members to Capitol Hill to engage directly with U.S. lawmakers on issues vital to science, technology, engineering, and innovation.
Region 5 was well represented among the 330 participants—the largest group in CVD history—with members from Texas, Arkansas, Colorado, and beyond. Collectively, the delegation attended over 240 meetings with Senators, Representatives, and committee staff, making it a record-setting year for outreach and policy engagement.
Members emphasized IEEE-USA’s core legislative priorities, including:

  • Increased funding for federal scientific research agencies
  • Support for small business innovation programs like SBIR/STTR
  • Policies to democratize access to AI technologies
  • Strengthening K–12 STEM education across the nation

Arkansas IEEE members met with Senators John Boozman and Tom Cotton, as well as Representative Steve Womack, and even briefed the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee staff on emerging engineering challenges and innovation needs.
For many participants, the experience continues to deepen their sense of civic engagement and professional purpose.
IEEE Senior Member Azgar Ali N, a technical program manager at Google in Austin, Texas, captured his CVD experience in a personal essay for IEEE Spectrum. His reflections highlighted not just the policy priorities, but also the personal importance of engineers showing up, advocating for their field, and helping shape the national agenda.
Read Azgar’s full story in IEEE Spectrum
CVD 2025 once again proved that when IEEE members come together—from labs, classrooms, startups, and industry—to speak with a united voice, they can shape conversations that matter and champion a future led by innovation.

Turning It Up in Region 5: An IEEE Road Trip Across Texas
What began as a simple idea among four IEEE-HKN Lambda Zeta members quickly grew into a purposeful journey across Texas—to connect with IEEE members, energize students, and strengthen leadership across Region 5.
Our first stop was Austin, where we linked up with IEEE Region 5 Director Matt Francis. Together with the local Young Professionals team, we hosted a lively gathering at Meanwhile Brewing, bringing together Life Members, YPs, and student leaders for great conversations, new friendships, and shared energy for IEEE’s mission.
Next, we headed to Texas State University in San Marcos for a student and faculty meet-and-greet. Matt presented a powerful talk using the new Region 5 metrics dashboard developed by Case Kirk, helping students visualize their impact and potential within IEEE.
The journey culminated in College Station. On the eve of Texas A&M’s inaugural IEEE Semiconductor Summit, Matt briefed TAMU student leaders on the structure and opportunities within IEEE, followed by an inspiring session from Chad Kidder on career and life balance—a reminder that effective leadership starts with personal well-being.
The summit itself, themed “Empowering Students to Lead the Chip Revolution,” brought together 20 distinguished speakers, including voices from Keysight, Cadence, and Texas Instruments. Interactive booths, expert panels, and hands-on engagement made it a standout event, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.
From campus connections to statewide collaboration, this journey proved that when IEEE members come together with purpose, they can truly turn it up across Region 5.

Building Bridges Through STEAM: IEEE Pikes Peak Section Joins Filipino Independence Day Celebration
On June 15, 2025, IEEE Pikes Peak Section joined the Annual Filipino American Community of Southern Colorado (FACSC) Filipino Independence Day Picnic in Colorado Springs to bring STEAM education directly to families and future engineers.
Dr. John Santiago, representing the Pikes Peak Section’s ongoing STEAM-TEAMS outreach initiative, set up an interactive mini-demo table showcasing science and engineering concepts. The booth attracted significant attention, with many families spending up to an hour engaging with hands-on demonstrations.
Dr. Alexander Africa, current FACSC President, invited Dr. Santiago to give an impromptu introduction to IEEE and its local STEM activities. The positive response sparked interest in further collaboration, with plans for future events involving air-propelled rockets and kites already underway.
Approximately 250 attendees visited the event, including many parents and grandparents who expressed appreciation for the accessible engineering outreach. The event is now being planned as an annual fixture for the Pikes Peak Section’s multi-year STEAM-TEAMS community engagement program, with an eye toward mentoring students and preparing for upcoming events like the Cool Science Carnival and Festival (September 27 – October 12, 2025).
The next day, on June 16, Dr. Santiago delivered a follow-up presentation at the 21st Century Library to IEEE Section members. He shared insights on FACSC engagement, Do-It-Yourself STEAM kits, and IEEE’s growing role in community-based engineering education.
This collaboration reflects IEEE’s commitment to inclusive outreach and supporting the next generation of engineers through partnerships that unite culture, education, and innovation.
