Substation and T&D Grounding, Safety, and Lightning Protection
On Thursday, May 26th, IEEE (PI)2 Austin held a well-attended and successful in person day-long workshop entitled “Substation and T&D Grounding, Safety, and Lightning Protection” in Austin, Texas.
This one-day workshop took a deep dive into Power System Safety & Lightning Protection and the role of grounding and bonding, including: grounding system design principles, grounding system performance, IEEE Standard 80 design procedures, soil characterization, integrated grounding system design procedures, and ground design for lightning, taught by Instructor: Professor A.P. Melipoulos of Georgia Tech. The attendees learned from an industry expert, enjoyed breakfast tacos, participated in a drawing for a donated AEMC model 6417 Clamp-On Ground Test meter, and stopped by vendor exhibits and demonstrations. Big “thank yous” to the Workshop team (lead by James Mercier) that organized the event, and the local industries who sent employees to attend.
