April 26th 2022 “The Short Circuit Current Rating”
On April 26th 2022, IEEE (PI)2 hosted a technical presentation by Charles Goertz on “The Short Circuit Current Rating”
The presentation covered the definition and purpose of the SCCR in protecting personnel and equipment. Charles discussed methods of determining the SCCR and how the National Electric Code (NEC) uses the SCCR, as well as pitfalls to avoid and how the available fault current is used with the SCCR. Charles also presented several case studies and problems he has seen as an on-site compliance engineer – including mislabeled equipment and unintended wiring errors. While you can calculate the SSCR by hand, there exist free spreadsheets where the proper data can be entered that will streamline the process. The challenge is how to make sure you have the correct information. One-line diagrams and field verification of the wiring is required, and field verification can be challenging if wiring diagrams have not been updated to “as-built”. Charles’ humor and case examples kept the presentation lively and interesting.
About the Speaker:
Charles Goertz spent 6 years in the Navy’s Nuclear Power Program. He was assigned to the USS Kamehameha (SSBN 642) and the USS Pargo (SSN-650) as an electronics technician. After the Navy, he worked for Texas Instruments Computer Division in manufacturing and product engineering. In 1986, he started working as a compliance engineer at Texas Instruments. Since then he has worked at Dell Computer Corp., Eaton/CID, Alliant Tech Systems and TUV Rheinland as a compliance engineer. He has a BS in Electrical Engineering from University of Texas and he is a license professional engineer.
