Mentoring Kickstart Event

November 2, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm CDT

Co-sponsored by: Moriah Hargrove Anders – YP Chair

***CANCELED***

The benefits of providing mentorship and participating in mentoring programs are well-known.  These benefits include learning from the experiences of others, increasing your social and professional confidence (both from receiving good advice and providing good advice), increasing your ability to identify goals and setting plans for attaining the goals, meeting new friends, enhancing your CV, reinforcing your own skills and knowledge, and forcing you to verbalize your opinions, achievements, and thoughts.  See Ashton University.  In sum, mentoring provides older individuals renew communication skills and remain in touch with current industry trends and provides younger participants welcome points of stability during change and provide guidance in areas they’re unfamiliar with.  See Institute of Physics

To bring these benefits to our IEEE HOU members, IEEE HOU Young Professionals in collaboration with IEEE UH Student Branch have planned a mentoring kickstart event.  This event will feature a casual environment of attendees who want a mentor and mentors who want a mentee – and thus will remove certain barriers associated with finding a mentor.  The primary barrier being that…well…we know it can be awkward asking for help and advice sometimes.

Through this event, students, experienced IEEE members, and IEEE Young Professionals can be connected to each other and each other’s experiences without discrimination or fear of being rejected by your potential mentor.  This event is open to all IEEE members at a discounted rate and friends/contacts of members of the public at full price.

A special gift will be given to each member who gets a friend to sign up for an IEEE members and for the event.  The friend must email the IEEE YP chair moriah.s.hargrove.anders@ieee.org with a screenshot showing the date of initiation or purchase (expected to be a date between October 21 and Nov 2) and advocating for the fact that the member recommended they join IEEE and attend the event.

IEEE started a mentoring program online. If you are more interested in mentoring individuals outside of our IEEE Houston community, consider checking out the IEEE global mentoring program.

Dinner from Houston’s prominently featured Himalaya will be provided as well as a presentation covering IEEE member benefits. Dinner will include saffron rice, aloo chana masala, and chicken tikki masala, with an estimated value of $20 per person.  Steep discount on dinner is provided to IEEE members who register for the event.

Address will be provided to attendees who register for the networking event.
