IEEE HOU Sec: Microbots Technology as Biological Agents
IEEE HOU Sec: Microbots Technology as Biological Agents
Co-sponsored by: Jared Johnson In the 2014 Disney movie Big Hero 6, the protagonist Hiro offers a profound view into the future by manufacturing a swarm of 105 microbots. Hiro controls them to self-assemble, to build structures, and to transport goods and materials. While the “microrobots” of the film are fantasy, the ideas are rooted in reality. Producing large numbers of micro and nano bots is possible today. Micro-robots can be manufactured in large numbers by MEMS processes. Also, biological agents such as bacteria and paramecium can be grown to achieve large swarms. Mr. Aaron Becker's vision is for a large swarms of robots remotely guided 1) through the human body, to cure disease, heal tissue, and prevent infection and 2) ex vivo to assemble structures in parallel. A big barrier to this vision is a lack of control techniques that can reliably exploit large populations despite incredible under-actuation. Results are validated with hardware experiments using over 100 robots, extensive simulations, and over 10,000 human-user trials. You can help -- visit http://swarmcontrol.net and play some games. Speaker(s): Aaron T. Becker, Agenda: 6:30 Registration 6:45 Dinner 7:15 Presentation 8:15 Q&A 8:30 Speaker Appreciation Presentation Location: Bldg: HESS Club 5430 Westheimer Rd Houston, Texas 77056

IEEE Houston Section Volunteers Needed for the 2017 North Shore Middle School Science Fair
Co-sponsored by: Heather Seibert North Shore Middle School will be hosting its annual Science Fair in a few short months. We would like to invite you and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers to help judge this event. Our Science Fair will take place on February 8, 2017 at North Shore Middle School, located at 120 Castlegory, Houston, TX 77015. The event will start at 8:15 a.m. and usually concludes around 2:00 p.m., once all the projects have been judged. Our students have worked hard to complete their projects and are eager to show them off to community members and professionals in the field of science. Volunteers will need to evaluate the entire grade level category which usually contains 15-25 projects. Categories include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Consumer, and Behavioral Science. Our staff and students would greatly appreciate you offering your time and I assure you it will make a difference in these select students’ lives. If you or any of the members of your organization are interested in volunteering, please contact me at [email protected] or 832-386-2765. Location: Galenda Park ISD North Shore Middle School 120 Castlegory Rd Houston, Texas 77015
