IEEE Day 2023 Houston Section
On Tuesday, October 3, 2023, IEEE Day commemorates the anniversary of the first time when IEEE members gathered to share their technical ideas, which took place in 1884. Worldwide celebrations demonstrate the ways thousands of IEEE members in local communities join together to collaborate on ideas that leverage technology for a better tomorrow.
This year we now engraved in its essence, the IEEE Day’s theme is: “Leveraging Technology for a Better Tomorrow”. While the world benefits from what’s new, IEEE focuses on what’s next.
The IEEE R5 Houston Section partnered with the IEEE University Partnership Program (UPP) and the EATON Experience Center for IEEE Day 2023.
This interactive networking event included a Texas-style Happy Hour with beer, wine, and BBQ from Zach’s Shack followed by a presentation from Dr. Zhu Han from the University of Houston. Dr. Han presented on the applications of AI and Machine Learning in the oil & gas and energy industries. Plus offered some Continuing Education pre-events including the opportunity to earn a Professional Development Hour (PDH) on Arc-Flash training, and a plant tour that offered different Electrical solution field applications.

Keynote Presentation on AI and Machine Learning in the Oil & Gas and Energy Industry
Presented by: Dr. Zhu Han from the University of Houston
This presentation explores how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is driving transformative change within the Oil and Gas industry. We delve into AI’s potential to optimize resource allocation, reduce costs, and enhance efficiency. We also discuss key applications of AI, including enhanced subsurface imaging with various machine learning methods (supervised, self-supervised, and reinforcement learning), predictive maintenance, and risk assessment, highlighting its impact on safety, sustainability, and cost savings. Case studies demonstrate AI’s research implementation in subsurface signal processing and sensor optimization. We provide insights about challenges in AI adoption and offer strategies learned from experiences for successful practical development. Additionally, the presentation would discuss challenges in AI adoption, such as workforce readiness and data-centric issues, while offering strategies for successful implementation. It emphasizes AI’s potential to revolutionize the industry, promoting widespread adoption for a sustainable and efficient future.
IEEE’s Professional Development Suite
Presented by: Susan Hutton, Director of IEEE Sales
Technology changes fast, and lifelong learning is a must for engineers and other technical professionals. IEEE offers a wealth of continuing education content for your own professional development and provides resources that help your organization educate engineers effectively. In this session, you’ll learn about the latest continuing education resources from IEEE.
Arc-Flash Training: Learn how to improve safety and follow the NEC and NFPA 70E rules
Speaker: Andrew Gusev, Eaton
Eaton’s arc flash safety training shows you how to design and consider the rules and regulations when designing your facilities and determine incident energy values with arc flash boundaries. You’ll use that information to select electrical components designed to minimize arc flash hazards and to choose the right personal protective equipment (PPE) according to NFPA 70 and NFPA 70E. Each student will receive 1 PDH from Eaton for completing this course. Attendance will be verified after the event by the IEEE Houston Section.
Eaton Experience Center Tour
From a mock petrochemical refinery to a substation and power distribution grid, the Eaton Experience Center in Houston provides a global education solution with the unique ability to provide hands-on training in a true-to-life environment. Join us for a high-level, one-hour tour of this 55,000-square-foot facility.
Special thanks to Ernest Njouondo, Payal Majumdar, Andrew Gusev, Christopher Sanderson, and Jalyn Kelly for all of your help and support with our 2023 IEEE Day Celebration.
