IEEE R5 Houston Section Texas Southern University Career Discussions

On Thursday, March 15, 2023, I had the opportunity to facilitate a Career Discussion at Texas Southern University that centered around the importance of understanding industry standards in our major or industry. Standards form the fundamental building blocks for product development by establishing consistent protocols that can be universally understood and adopted. This helps fuel compatibility and interoperability that simplifies product development, and speeds proof of concept. As standards are globally adopted and applied in many markets, they also fuel international trade. We also discussed  Utility Scale Battery Solutions and the standards that will be applicable to the Smart Grid of tomorrow.

The seminar delve into the essence of standards and unravel the key electrical standards that underpin modern energy systems. Standards, the fundamental building blocks for product development, establish consistent protocols that can be universally understood and adopted. In turn, this fosters compatibility, interoperability, and simplification of product development processes, expediting the proof of concept. Which in turn help advance their career and the potential for future growth.

  • The energy industry is undergoing a pivotal transformation where the electric infrastructure is changing to a more decentralized model toward more sustainable energy solutions.
  • With more than 80% of the total energy produced globally coming from fossil fuel-powered thermal plants, we are seeing a trend of reducing water consumption and altogether shifting away from this kind of energy production.
  • Energy efficiency initiatives and technologies are increasingly implemented across the globe.

Some feedback some of our students that attended.

I wanted to thank you for the great presentation to my class. I collected some comments from my students to share with you to demonstrate both my students and my appreciation for your presentation. I think my students now understand standards and why they are important for the engineering profession. Here is what some of my students wanted you to know:

  • I would like to tell Mr. Sanderson to thank you for his time to present to the class and thank you for the new information about standards
  • Great presentation, I really enjoyed your emphasis on the importance of standards in the industry and your use of knowledge evaluations
  • I loved the comparison and history lesson to how these are relevant in a project of our own. Also advisements on collaborating with a project
  • Good presentation enjoyed the brief history of the standard, and why they were created. and what is the process to sign up to be an IEEE Student Member?

Once again, similar to my students’ sentiments, I appreciate your time and willingness to present to my class.

Best Regards,
