The Fresh Start program is sponsored by HP Inc., Fluor, and the University of Houston. Fresh Start, is a one day STEM based event that was designed to ignite curiosity and passion for STEM subjects, for grades 3-12 to have hands-on engagement.

Students will discover, experiment, and collaborate in a series of dynamic science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) workshops, fostering an interactive and creative environment that encourages students to delve into the realms of exploration.

The IEEE HOU Sec will be presenting the IEEE Standard University MARS Space Colony, A game of Standardization Program. Facilitated by Christopher Sanderson.

NSBE Fresh Start brings together a diverse group of professionals, educators, and mentors who are dedicated to inspiring the next generation of STEM enthusiasts. Through thought-provoking workshops and activities, Fresh Start aims to break down barriers and demystify complex concepts, making STEM subjects not only accessible but also exciting.

Mars Space Colony: A Game of Standardization is crafted by experts with 20+ years’ experience in the high-stakes, real-world technical standards development.

• Unique team-building experience: Through role-play, participants practice negotiation, consensus-building and have fun working through the standards development process.
• Technical background not required: Players are assigned roles commonly found in standards working groups that reflect the economic, political, and technical realities of standards development.
• Meets many ABET Criteria: Includes topics like the importance of standards to industry, fundamentals of standards development, and two case studies on standards, which is ideal for academic institutions seeking ABET engineering accreditation.

Why Standards Education is Important

Technical standards are formal documents that establish uniform engineering or technical criteria, methods, processes and practices developed through an accredited consensus process. Recognizing the important role standards play within the engineering, technology and computing fields, IEEE is providing resources to help introduce and teach undergraduate and graduate students, as well as professors and educators, about technical standards. Knowledge of standards can help facilitate the transition from classroom to professional practice by aligning educational concepts with real-world applications.
