A Study of Retail Energy Provider Options for PV / Battery Installations and EV Charging
Synopsis A review was undertaken of residential electrical plans with various consumer benefits for electric vehicle owners. The plans mostly offered reduced rates (cents/kWh) for EV owners charging at home with various stipulations, e.g. time-of use rates. Rates were lower, down to zero, for critical time windows which varied by plan. For EV owners with solar panels, some plans included solar buyback options. And for one REP, EV owners with solar panels and a Tesla PowerWall back-up battery, could store solar production in the battery and export excess power to the grid during periods of spiking prices. After four billing cvcles (May-August 2023), the author has experienced sales to the grid at rates approaching $5.00 per kWh and monthly bills ranging from $96 to -$128.
