IEEE Central Texas (Austin) ComSoc Joint chapter jointly with Texas State – Ingram School of Engineering invites you to a Distinguished Lecture on Energy harvesting IoT Devices: 3GPP Standardization Activities Dr. Majid Butt Nokia Date: Thursday November 14, 2024 Time: 8:00 am – 9:15 am Central Time Location: Remote RSVP: vTools Registration: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/444678 Zoom Info https://zoom.us/j/97004449089?pwd=AMbdnjeIkOaUiY8FbmTbyj5E05BrbK.1 Meeting ID: 970 0444 9089 Passcode: 918062 Topic Title: Energy harvesting IoT Devices: 3GPP Standardization Activities Distinguished Lecturer: Dr. Majid. Butt, Nokia Abstract: Ambient internet of things (IoT) is the network of devices which harvest energy from ambient sources for powering their communication. After decades of research on operation of these devices, Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has started discussing energy harvesting technology in cellular networks to support massive deployment of IoT devices at low operational cost. This talk provides a timely update on 3GPP studies on ambient energy harvesting devices. The talk emphasizes that the AIoT technology will require a new system design approach as compared to New Radio (NR) system design in 5G as AIoT devices are low cost, small form factor devices and don’t possess the device capabilities of NR devices. Bio: M. Majid Butt is a senior staff research scientist at Nokia, USA, and an adjunct Research Professor at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. Prior to that, he has held various positions at the University of Glasgow, U.K., Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, and Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute, Germany. He has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed articles and contributed to more than 100 filed/granted patents in cellular networks domain. He was declared outstanding Nokia inventor of the year for the years 2021, 2022, and 2023. Dr. Butt was a recipient of the Marie Curie Alain Bensoussan Post-Doctoral Fellowship from the European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics. He has served as an associate editor for IEEE Communication Magazine and serves as an associate editor for IEEE Open Journal of the Communication Society and IEEE Open Journal of Vehicular Technology. He is a senior member of IEEE and an IEEE COMSOC distinguished speaker for the class of 2022-2025. He was industry program chair for IEEE WCNC 2023 and 2024.
