TITLE: Reconfigurable Metasurfaces for 6G Wireless: Hardware Architectures, Modeling, Optimization, and Applications, by Dr. George C. Recent speculations for this upcoming new generation push the 5G performance indicators to unprecedented levels, envisioning THz frequency bands, devices with embedded sensing capabilities, and native artificial intelligence. All these are expected to become a reality around 2030 and with a strong green footprint. In this talk, we will elaborate around the emerging technology of reconfigurable metasurfaces which is provisioned as the enabler of smart wireless environments, offering a highly scalable, low-cost, hardware-efficient, and almost energy-neutral solution for the dynamic control of the propagation of electromagnetic signals, as well as, very recently, their transmission and reception. We will discuss their evolution from programmable reflecting metamaterials to connected computational- and power-autonomous hybrid metasurfaces as well as metasurface-based holographic MIMO transceivers, emphasizing on the state-of-the-art modeling approaches and their imminent applications for communications, localization, sensing, and their integration. Short Biography: George C. Alexandropoulos received the Engineering Diploma (Integrated M.S.c), M.A.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Engineering and Informatics from the School of Engineering, University of Patras, Greece in 2003, 2005, and 2010, respectively. He has held research positions at various Greek universities and research institutes, as well as at the Mathematical and Algorithmic Sciences Lab, Paris Research Center, Huawei Technologies France, and he is currently an Assistant Professor with the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications, School of Sciences, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), Greece. He also serves as a Principal Researcher for the Technology Innovation Institute, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. His research interests span the general areas of algorithmic design and performance analysis for wireless networks with emphasis on multi-antenna transceiver hardware architectures, active and passive Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs), integrated communications and sensing, millimeter wave and THz communications, as well as distributed machine learning algorithms. He currently serves as an Editor for IEEE Transactions on Communications, IEEE Wireless Communications Letters, ELSEVIER Computer Networks, Frontiers in Communications and Networks, and the ITU Journal on Future and Evolving Technologies. In the past, he has held various fixed-term and guest editorial positions for IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications and IEEE Communications Letters, as well as for various special issues at IEEE journals. Prof. Alexandropoulos is a Senior Member of the IEEE Communications, Signal Processing, Vehicular Technology, and Information Theory Societies, the vice-chair of the EURASIP Technical Area Committee on Signal Processing for Communications and Networking, as well as a registered Professional Engineer of the Technical Chamber of Greece. He is also a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Communications Society. He has participated and/or technically managed more than 15 European Union (EU), international, and Greek research, innovation, and development projects. He is currently NKUA's principal investigator for the EU H2020 RISE‑6G and the SNS JU TERRAMETA projects dealing with RIS-empowered smart wireless environments and THz RISs, respectively. For the former project he also serves as the dissemination manager, whereas for the latter, he also serves as the project’s technical manager. Prof. Alexandropoulos has received the best Ph.D. thesis award 2010, the IEEE Communications Society Best Young Professional in Industry Award 2018, the EURASIP Best Paper Award of the Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking 2021, the IEEE Marconi Prize Paper Award in Wireless Communications 2021, and a Best Paper Award from the IEEE GLOBECOM 2021. This one-day workshop has four parts under two major divisions: Parts 1 – 3 will explore the changes in the 2023 version of the National Electrical Safety Code Handbook (NESC, IEEE STD C2-2023) which will be provided each registered participant as Workshop material. The IEEE Handbook contains the full NESC plus the commentary in one text. This is new this year. Part 4 will cover arc flash including two effective methods to calculate arc flash for small electrical services, especially single-phase 100-amp services, and the strengths of each method. The first version of roadmap white paper was published in 2017 that led to the creation of 15 working groups. These working groups include Applications and Services, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Connecting the Unconnected, Deployment, Edge Services and Automation, Energy Efficiency, Hardware, Massive MIMO, Millimeter Wave and Signal Processing, Optics, Satellite, Standardization and Building Blocks, Systems Optimization, and Testbed. As the industry continues to advance, the evolution and deployment of network generations is influenced and impacted not only by emerging, evolving, and potential convergence of technologies, but also by local and world socio-economic and health conditions (and politics). So much can happen in a year, which is why the INGR is a living document that is updated annually. The inaugural INGR was released in 2020 and its focus was primarily on the evolution of 5G networks. The intention of the 2021 INGR Edition was to take a more end-to-end perspective that included integrating future network technologies and establish a transdisciplinary framework and a predictive model for mobile networks. 2022 and the next two years will be a time of heavy 5G deployment, transformation at the edge, and increased interworking of network technologies and systems. Hence, the 2022 Edition of the IEEE Future Networks International Network Generations Roadmap (INGR) points to trends, challenges, and solutions in the current and near-term mobile network landscape, and the future vision as being cultivated through the activities of Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) and the industry around the globe. This 2022 INGR Edition broadens applications of the transdisciplinary framework, progresses each technology and system challenges and opportunities especially while interworking with other areas — while noting lessons learned that can be applied to beyond 5G. As part of this panel, the working group co-chairs will share the highlights of various INGR technology working groups and how these will affect the evolution of next generation networks and deployments over varying timelines. “Interconnect Gap” has been a long-standing big challenge caused by the gap between the ever-increasing data rate demand of inter-/intrachip communications and the insufficient capabilities. Existing electrical interconnect (EI) and optical interconnect (OI) face grand barriers to completely address the interconnect issues individually. THz Interconnect (TI), utilizing the frequency spectrum sandwiched between microwave and optical frequencies, holds the high potentials to complement EI and OI by leveraging the advantages of both electronics and optics. In this talk, I will present our research activities in the high potential TI field, including THz silicon waveguide channel development, TI system demonstration, dispersion constrained link bandwidth and mitigation schemes such as Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM) and Mode Division Multiplexing (MDM). The enormous advancement of digital technology and Internet usage has significantly improved our lives but has also threatened our security and privacy. Cyberattacks may have harmful long-term implications for individuals and organizations. High school students are accessible targets for various cybercrimes due to the lack of cybersecurity knowledge and cyber-safe practices. It is important that education about cybersecurity awareness and cyber hygiene practices begin at a young age. Offering cybersecurity knowledge through interactive tutorials and game-based techniques may increase students’ interest in this domain. To develop a security mindset and improve the perception and attitude toward cybersecurity, we created an interactive visualization and practice-based cybersecurity framework for high school students. Through this framework, we attempt to effectively educate students in cybersecurity through animated visualization modules developed in Unity 3D engine, enabling learning of physical, software, and mathematical aspects of cybersecurity. In addition, several other lectures and hands-on activities were developed. Several surveys were conducted to determine whether this framework enhances users' cognitive abilities and improves or develops a security mindset among teenagers. We discuss challenges in such an implementation in a classroom setting, lessons learned, and potential ways of integration into an existing course on computer science or cybersecurity. If time permits, we may also look at another math-oriented high school project that served as a foundation of this project. Abstract On Thursday morning, January 7, 1999, a woman walking to work in San Antonio TX died on the sidewalk in front of UTSA downtown. The cause was ruled as electrocution from an energized metal lid in the sidewalk. The resultant investigation revealed a lack of final inspection on the original work and many problems with subsequent work. Enough that San Antonio’s Central Power Supply (CPS) and others paid out a combined $6.4M. James Mercier, who was at that time an engineer for the Texas Department of Transportation, will present and discuss the various errors discovered from his investigation for TxDOT and in the court records. Long after the court case was settled, James may have figured out what really happened that day! Pursuits in Near Space - A Technical Hobby at a Higher Level Systems that operate in the atmosphere above the inversion layer and in near-earth orbit have been limited to government funded efforts led by academic institutions, civilian space organizations like NASA & ESA or defense departments. The question is - how can someone with technical interest but a limited budget participates in these kinds of activities? Advances in software defined radios and standardized, small, modular spacecraft have enabled amateurs and citizen scientists to build and operate these systems. High altitude balloons and cube-sats have made these activities affordable and interacting with these systems is easier than ever, especially for those with some computer and electronics background. This talk will explore possibilities for using these technologies for the technical hobbyist, education, scientific research and informing the public.
