This is the first of the three "GBS EMBS WEEK" presentations Many models exist for early-stage innovation and problem-solving. The healthcare system is highly complex, and traditional models often fail to produce real-world implemented solutions. This presentation will describe in brief a model developed in our center that combines best-practices from industry and academic programs to increase the likelihood of success in healthcare innovation. This is one of the three presentations of GBS EMBS WEEK Capitalizing on the new understanding of brain plasticity, we introduced a paradigm shift in clinical practice in 1989 when we initiated the development of the MIT-Manus robot for neuro-rehabilitation and deployed it in the clinic. Since then we collected evidence to support the potential of enhancing and augmenting recovery following a stroke, first during the sub-acute and then the chronic phase. Our efforts and that of others led to endorsements starting in 2010 from the American Heart Association, the American Stroke Association, and the Veterans Administration for the use of rehabilitation robots for the Upper Extremity, but not yet for the Lower Extremity. AHA recommendations were the same in the 2016 revision. Furthermore, it was demonstrated in the VA system that upper extremity robotic therapy has an economic advantage over manual therapy. More recently we completed a pragmatic study RATULS under the auspices of the National Health Service of the United Kingdom and its NIHR Health Technology Assessment Programme, which enrolled 770 stroke patients. Thus, we have developed novel robotic treatment and evaluation tools and have managed to collect experimental evidence that demonstrates the unequivocal therapeutic benefits stemming from robot-aided rehabilitation for the upper extremity as well as present shortcomings. This talk will present an overview of our past rehabilitation robotics efforts and more recent efforts addressing the identified shortcomings. This is the second presentation of GBS EMBS WEEK. The lecture will start by addressing general concepts about Biomedical Engineering and Rehabilitation Robotics. Afterward, the latest developments of optical fiber sensors for healthcare applications, including health monitoring, wearable robotics, and other assistive devices' instrumentation will be presented. Finally, the presenter will address different developments and implementations of human-robot-environment interaction strategies for robotic devices to assist cognitive and motor disabilities. As engineering educators, the task of teaching entrepreneurship in the classroom can seem daunting. Fortunately, there are organizations such as Engineering Unleashed dedicated to training educators on how to incorporate more entrepreneurship mindsets into the classroom. In this presentation, we will answer the following: - What is an Entrepreneurship Mindset? - What resources does Engineering Unleashed have to offer? - What are some examples of entrepreneurially-minded activities we can deploy in the classroom? More specifically, we will discuss some of the recent entrepreneurially focused classroom activities deployed into a core curriculum physiology course for biomedical engineers and the potential impact. This is the first of the three "GBS AEROSPACE WEEK" Presentations Developing advanced spacecraft avionics and scientific instruments for unmanned space missions is a particularly challenging endeavor that requires solutions accommodating many conflicting design constraints including: - State-of-the-art technologies for data, signal, and image processing, - High-reliability hardware and software requirements, - Long-duration missions involving dormant and operational periods, - Extreme physical, electromagnetic, and radiation environments, - Size, weight, and power limitations, - High Technology Readiness Level (TRL) designs, and - Proven flight heritage. The purpose of this lecture is to discuss these design considerations, illustrated by several examples from past and current unmanned space missions. THIS IS THE SECOND OF THE THREE GBS AEROSPACE WEEK PRESENTATIONS. Since the dawn of the space age more than 60 years ago, most of what has been accomplished in space has been carried out by governments or government space agencies. In the future, that is no longer likely to be the case. For example, just since July 2021, 3 different companies have successfully conducted a total of 8 commercial human spaceflights, with 36 private citizens having the opportunity to travel to space. This presentation provides a fascinating first-person account of one such mission and the training leading up to it: the fourth human flight of Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket. THIS IS THE THIRD AND THE LAST PRESENTATION OF GBS AEROSPACE WEEK The impacts of CoVid on the supply chain have increased the design and component acquisition portions of avionics development. The result is a compression of the time available for manufacturing and testing prior to qualification. This presentation reviews some strategies to manage program risk in this new environment.
