The latest McKinsey Global Survey on AI in May of 2024 concludes that 2023 was the year the world discovered generative AI (GenAI) and 2024 is the year organizations truly began using—and deriving business value from—this new technology. An incredible 65 percent of respondents report that their organizations are regularly using GenAI, which is nearly double the percentage from the previous survey just ten months before. The recent Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) reaffirms the decarbonizing of the transportation sector in the United States. This bill will ensure the penetration of EVs in all sectors by increasing charging station accessibility and removing barriers to further EV adoption nationwide. This mandates to investigation of all transportation sectors for EV adoption and remove the barriers. School buses are one of the largest bus networks in the USA. These buses are widely run on fossil fuels and require the execution of a variety of steps before their electrification. Before these e-school buses can be deployed at the mass level, we need to understand the energy needs and influence their fleet composition. The energy need requires a thorough understanding of each school district for their road loads (number of bus stops, trip duration, electric range, and grade profile). Typically, we see 4 types of school buses on the road these days, however, the 4 types will not be sustainable options for their electric variants, unless the whole design space is investigated for optimal sizes. Unlike diesel variants, battery holds the primary cost in the EV, oversizing it will have a significant financial impact on the school districts. Besides the road loads, the other major subsystems consuming the school bus’s energy resources are the body and dash heating and cooling loads. The bus body climate control load on the battery can impact its range and performance. These loads can impact the bus range by 50+%. Under Don’s leadership, the IEEE Fellow Committee has planned a full implementation of the BoD approved improvements, particularly specific measures for industry member engagement, particularly on standards development. The IEEE fellow grade is a prestigious recognition by the Institute to a single individual for his or her technical accomplishments, impacting society at large. It commands global acclaim and is a prestigious honor eagerly pursued by individuals worldwide. How do you answer the question then: Am I qualified to be considered for an IEEE fellow, particularly, as a member from industry? What is the best way to prepare a nomination package? From its early years as a global information infrastructure, the Internet, originally designed by and for the US Department of Defense, has been efficiently and effectively misused by various hate groups who often consider the US government their worst enemy. For example, it turned out that WWW played a critical role in the preparation of the 9/11 attacks both as a source of inspirational information and as a safe means of covert communication between the plotters. Shortly after the tragic events of 2001, our binational team of US and Israeli researchers started to explore the online activities of various hate groups. Initially, we developed a prototype of a monitoring system aimed at detecting the frequent visitors of terrorist websites, which may become influenced by terrorist propaganda and eventually develop into what we call today “the lone wolf attackers”. Shortly after, we focused on another, closely related question: what makes terrorist-generated propaganda content in various languages different from unbiased news reports discussing similar topics? Over the years, we developed prototypes of several additional text analysis tools such as text summarization algorithms, which can automatically summarize large amounts of untranslated content in any language, as well as AI tools for automated detection of metaphoric language. After presenting the motivational and ethical foundations of our research, I plan to describe some of our methods and finally, discuss past and future challenges in this important and fascinating domain. [] Speaker: Prof. Shilong Pan, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics Topic: Microwave Photonic Radars Abstract: As the only method for all-weather and long-distance target detection and recognition, radar has been intensively studied since it was proposed, and is considered as an essential sensor for future intelligent society. In the past few decades, great efforts were devoted to improve radar’s functionality, precision, and response time, of which the key is to generate, control and process a wideband signal with a high speed. Thanks to the high frequency, large bandwidth, low loss transmission and electromagnetic immunity provided by modern photonics, implementation of the radars in the optical domain can provide better performance in terms of resolution, coverage and speed which may not be achievable using traditional, even state-of-the-art electronics. In this talk, I'll give an overview of the photonic technologies that are currently known to be attractive for radars. System architectures and their performance that may interest the radar society are emphasized. Emerging technologies in this area and possible future research directions are discussed. Speaker Bio: Shilong Pan is currently a professor of Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, China. His research has focused on microwave photonics, which includes optical generation and processing of microwave signals, analog photonic links, photonic microwave measurement, and integrated microwave photonics. He has authored or co-authored over 300 papers in peer-reviewed journals. Prof. Pan is currently a deputy Editor of Chinese Optics Letters, an associate editor of IEEE/Optica Journal of Lightwave Technology and IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques, and is the vice chair of IEEE MTT-22 Microwave Photonics. He has also served as a Chair of a number of international conferences, symposia, and workshops, including the TPC Chair of IEEE ICOCN 2015, the TPC chair of IEEE MWP2023, a TPC Co-chair of IEEE MWP2017, and a General Co-chair of IEEE MWP2021. Clear and frequent communication is a foundational aspect of collaboration. Effective communication not only enables and sustains the shared situational awareness necessary for adaptation and coordination, but is often a requirement given the opaque nature of decision-making in autonomous systems. In this talk I will share my lab's recent work at the intersection of human-machine communication and human-aware optimization under partially observable conditions. Through these advances we are able to realize human-autonomy teams that are greater than the sum of their parts, enabling autonomous systems to operationalize psychological insights about human cognition for effective communication, to distill and disseminate knowledge from machine learning models for real-time multimodal decision support, and even to help humans overcome limitations induced by sensory impairment.
