Efficient Computing for AI and Robotics: From Hardware Accelerators to Algorithm Design The compute demands of AI and robotics continue to rise due to the rapidly growing volume of data to be processed; the increasingly complex algorithms for higher quality of results; and the demands for energy efficiency and real-time performance. In this talk, we will discuss the design of efficient tailored hardware accelerators and the co-design of algorithms and hardware that reduce the energy consumption while delivering swift real-time and robust performance for applications including deep neural networks, data analytics with sparse tensor algebra, and autonomous navigation. Throughout the talk, we will highlight important design principles, methodologies, and tools that can facilitate an effective design process and various forms of co-design that can broaden the design space. Vivienne Sze is a Professor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department at MIT. She works on computing systems that enable energy-efficient machine learning, computer vision, and video compression/processing for a wide range of applications, including autonomous navigation, digital health, and the internet of things. Her work has been recognized by various awards, including faculty awards from Google, Facebook, and Qualcomm, the Symposium on VLSI Circuits Best Student Paper Award, the IEEE Custom Integrated Circuits Conference Outstanding Invited Paper Award, the IEEE Micro Top Picks Award and the International Symposium on Performance Analysis of Systems and Software Best Paper Award. As a member of the Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding, she received the Primetime Engineering Emmy Award for the development of the High-Efficiency Video Coding video compression standard. She is a co-editor of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC): Algorithms and Architectures (Springer, 2014) and co-author of Efficient Processing of Deep Neural Networks (Synthesis Lectures on Computer Architecture, Morgan Claypool, 2020). Early detection and efficient management of these disorders can provide significant health benefits. By providing real-time, data-driven insights AI-driven methods meet an urgent need for early detection and management of these disorders. In this talk, Prof. Phoha will present the potential of AI-driven early diagnosis and Digital Therapeutics (DTx) for neurological disorders. Using the unique properties of data generated through neurological anomalies and disorders, one can use AI methods such as transfer learning from existing knowledge; one-shot and few-shot learning for spiking and sparse data, and hidden Markov models to find underlying relationships and causes of malignant neurological disorders. The speaker will show how the generated data can be captured through smart wearables and phones, how uncovering relationships provides insights for digital rehabilitation, and how using augmented reality and virtual reality provides tremendous potential for cognitive therapy, psychiatric assessments, and rehabilitation. [] Recent advances in digital health technologies are enabling biomedical researchers to reframe health optimization and disease treatment in a patient-specific, personalized manner. This talk will focus on my group’s research in two areas of relevance to digital health: (1) cardiogenic vibration sensing and analytics; and (2) musculoskeletal sensing with joint acoustic emissions and bioimpedance. Our group has extensively studied the timings and characteristics of cardiogenic vibration signals such as the ballistocardiogram and seismocardiogram, and applied these signals for quantifying filling pressures and volume status in the context of heart failure (volume overload) and hemorrhage (volume depletion). We have also leveraged miniature contact microphones to measure the sounds emitted by joints, such as the knees, during movement, and have examined how these acoustic characteristics are altered by musculoskeletal injuries and disorders (e.g., arthritis). We envision that these technologies can all contribute to improving patient care with lower cost and better outcomes. Abstract: Recent news has published information on technology and infrastructure at risk for being compromised due to cyber-attacks. There are several instances in which these attacks have been successful and have resulted in great consequences. Integrating Cybersecurity into the engineering process will enable designs to be resilient against attacks and ensure that the technology can operate in an increasingly hostile environment.
