IEEE Tour: ABB – Fort Smith Lab and Plant Facilities
[] This event will be a tour of the ABB Lab and Plant facilities located in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Space is limited so registration will be set to 30 maximum attendees. If we have the full 30 attendees, there will be three separate tour groups: two will start simultaneously but go in different directions within the plant, and the third group will begin 5 minutes later. A lab representative will be assigned to each group. After completing the plant tour, the representative will guide the group to the lab, where they will wait for the remaining groups. The lab tour will be conducted with everyone together. Please note that safety shoes are mandatory in both the plant and lab areas. We have a limited supply of safety shoes available for loan, so we ask that attendees bring and wear their own if possible. Additionally, if anyone has prescription safety glasses with side shields, it’s best for them to wear these to avoid the bulkier over-the-glass style. The Ozark, Arkansas, and River Valley Sections are all co-hosting this event. This should be a great tour! Fort Smith is the US headquarters for ABB’s Motors and Generators business and the global headquarters for NEMA compliant motors. The 1.2 million electric motors produced annually in Fort Smith convert electricity into mechanical energy to do the work of industry, like, powering pumps, conveyors, fans, and compressors. Fort Smith includes our motors distribution center and advanced development lab. On September 25th, we are excited to have top industry expert Tyler Knutson presenting. All attendees receive a continuing education certificate for one professional development hour (PDH). This meeting's topic: the VFI transformer combines a transformer and a fully functional VFI in one cabinet. The vacuum fault interrupter (VFI) with factory installed and tested relay control package provides primary protection and digital communication in one complete package. This eliminates the need for medium-voltage switches or other monitoring devices which simplifies the installation and reduces installed footprint. Controlling the growth of grass and weeds is a necessary part on of large solar farm operations. Renu Robotics has developed autonomous mowing machines specifically designed to operate among arrays of solar panels. These battery powered, robotic systems are equipped with GPS and sensors for navigation and obstacle detection. Additional information is available at renubotics.com The program will include a presentation on the Renubot design and operation followed by a tour through the manufacturing facility. Reliable and scalable wireless transmissions for Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) are technically challenging. Each vehicle, from driver-assisted to automated one, will generate a flood of information, up to thousands of times of that by a person. Vehicle density may change drastically over time and location. Emergency messages and real-time cooperative control messages have stringent delay constraints, while infotainment applications may tolerate a certain degree of latency. On a congested road, vehicles need to exchange information badly, only to find that services are not available due to scarcity of wireless spectrum. Considering the service requirements of heterogeneous V2X applications, service guarantee relies on an in-depth understanding of network performance and innovations in wireless resource management. In this talk, we compare the performance of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) beacon broadcasting using random access-based (IEEE 802.11p) and resource allocation-based (C-V2X) protocols and introduce several enhancement strategies and prototypes to mitigate packet collisions, recover from transmission errors, and support two-user non-orthogonal transmissions. Microgrid Tour and Social Hour Tour Details: Join Nathan Kassees (Xcel Energy) for an on-site tour of the Xcel microgrid at the Arvada Arts and Humanities Center. The microgrid contains a 750 kW/ 3300 kWh battery that provides key grid services while maintaining a reserve battery capacity to support the center during outages. Note that PPE (hard hat and safety glasses) is required to enter the site. The Chapter will have limited spares, so please bring it if you have it.
