The affairs of IEEE Region 5 are expertly managed by the Regional Committee (RC), which reflects a blend of representative leadership and specialized expertise.
The core of the RC’s governance is its elected membership, comprising the Section Chairs from all 27 sections that make up the region, alongside the three top officers: the Director, Director-Elect, and Past-Director.
All other regional leadership roles—over 40 appointed positions in total—are filled by the Director through the Nominations & Appointments (N&A) process. To ensure continuity and efficiency, 12 of these appointed roles are specifically empowered by the Region 5 bylaws to become voting members of the Regional Committee upon approval of the Voting Members of the Regional Committee, on an annual term, with the exception that the Regional Student Activities Chair be approved for biennial term.
These 12 voting officers, combined with the three elected Directors, constitute the Executive Board (ExCom) of the Region. This 15-member Executive Board is tasked with carrying out the crucial day-to-day business of the region between full Regional Committee meetings.
The composition of the Executive Board is as follows:
- Elected Directors (3): Regional Director, Vice Chairperson/Director Elect, and Immediate Past Region 5 Director.
- Appointed Voting Officers (12): Secretary, Treasurer, Area Chairpersons, and the Chairpersons for Professional Activities, Student Activities, Educational Activities, Membership Development, Awards and Recognition, and Conference Committee.
The remaining appointed positions serve vital functions in coordination and consultation with the Executive Board, ensuring the successful execution of initiatives throughout the region and the entirety of IEEE.
This structure strategically integrates elected representation with appointed operational leadership, demonstrates how Region 5 is leading the way to work together as ONE IEEE.
