Abstract: Airports parallel cities in the sense that they require the foundation for the mobility of people, the systems to support infrastructure, safety and security of those that use the entity, and they must be futuristic in their planning as demographics and needs change. DFW is no except.  The DFW Airport contributes $61.3B annually to the North Texas GDP and welcomes over 73M passengers through its gates which creates challenges in terms of connectivity, support for communications and information technologies, and how to incorporate sustainable systems that will advance operational efficiency.  In August 2021, the Airport launched an initiative to explore Private Wireless.  Multiple stakeholders and market leaders were engaged to design the strategy that would lead to 5G, providing secured and dedicated wireless solutions, and eventually the backbone architecture for the future “smart airport”.   The presentation will share how the airport is designing a path for connectivity, planned for the incorporation of futuristic technologies, and engagement of other airports also struggling with the questions of how and what.

Bio: Maria joined the DFW International Airport Innovation team in 2019 as a Senior Consultant managing programs that align with the airport’s key initiatives to vet and propose technology that put the airport into a competitive space for the future.  Programs have included designing an Innovation Catalyst Center, Private Wireless deployments, business case validation for IoT networks, and security for land and airside. Previous to the airport, Maria built a twenty year career in Innovation, Strategy, Economic Development, and the delivery of technology solutions through ideation to commercialization.  Roles included management and execution across the public sector, start-up ventures, and Fortune 1000 to 100 companies.  She is passionate about engaging leaders to bridge the gap between ideation and solution deployments, and taking new products and services to market. Maria is a graduated of Queen’s University in Canada with a Bachelor’s of Arts Honors and completed a one-year thesis study at UT Dallas on the Richardson’s Telecom Corridor’s ability to leverage IP and technology clustering.  She is a past volunteer for IEEE, Entrepreneurs of North Texas, Tech Titans and multiple Chambers of Commerce.
