Program Description: Voting security is an area that interests many people because of recent applications of technology in voting. Listen to an expert discuss election technology issues. The presentation will examine election security including the following areas:

  • Texas elections,
  • High level view of Texas election systems and security measures,
  • look at 2016 election “Hacking”,
  • A discussion of foreign influence and information media,
  • A look at the 2018 election compared to 2016, and
  • Where do we go from here?

BIO:  Scott Brandt is the chief information officer for the Texas Secretary of State.  He is responsible for the operation and security of the agency’s information technology resources.  Scott graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace engineering (Class of ’91).  While on campus, he was a President’s Endowed Scholar and president of the Society of Flight Test Engineers.  He worked as a flight test engineer and in the semiconductor industry before taking a position at the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) in the information technology field.  After over ten years at TWC, Scott accepted the position of Information Technology Director at the Office of the Texas Secretary of State.  He has been a member of the Secretary of State executive team for over fourteen years.  Scott competed in the 2014 U.S. Cyber Challenge earning an invitation to the western region boot camp. He is an FBI Citizens’ Academy graduate and serves as president of the Capital of Texas InfraGard Chapter.  In addition, Scott holds several information security certifications including Certified Information Systems Security Officer, Certified Vulnerability Assessor, Certified Penetration Testing Engineer, and a Certificate of Cloud Security Knowledge.
