Abstract: Energy storage, in the form of lithium-ion batteries, is beginning to transform the electric power industry, bringing new functionality to power grids.  Values to the grid derive from the energy storage itself, modularity of battery storage, and the highly controllable inverter-based nature of battery energy storage.  The same battery maturity is driving the electric vehicle (EV) market.  EV’s in consumer and commercial fleet roles are expected to present new challenges and opportunities to the grid. This talk will review lithium-ion battery energy storage in power grids, and will touch on related elements of grid-connected electric vehicles.

Bio: Bill Muston is a member of the corporate strategy & emerging issues team at Oncor Electric Delivery Company LLC, a regulated electric utility in Texas.  He brings career perspective as Manager of R&D at Oncor to that role.  He focuses on emerging technologies and how they intersect with Oncor’s role to deliver electricity and meet customers’ changing needs.  Energy storage, driven by the rapidly maturing lithium-ion battery industry, has been a key focus since 2014.  Bill graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and an M.S. in Engineering.

CVT thanks Bill Muston for being able to rescheduling his presentation from Feb 16 to Mar 16. The planned Feb presentation had be be rescheduled due to the weather freeze and resulting electricity outages. His Mar 16 presentation should be more timely and interesting.
