Jan 2019 – Feb 2023: History and Achievements
Dr John Santiago was nominated by the late John Meridith for Section Chair and help revitalized the section, in Jul 2018. John Meridith, a 50-plus year IEEE member, was going to be Vice Chair to mentor Dr Santiago since he was not familiar with the daily operations of the Section.
Despite COVID lockdown during Jan 2020 – May 2023, the Section significantly increased its technical activities when compared to the previous four-year period. During this period, the Section developed a multi-media Website from scratched…much improved from a static and text-based website.
Dr. John Santiago handled the website from the ground up to be a strategic and long-term sustainability asset by providing detailed activities and documentation about creating value for its members and for the local Pikes Peak communities. The website played a key role in providing documentation for awards, references for scholarships, and entering graduate school during the COVID period
David Bondurant and Gene Freeman worked on increasing technical activities for the Section. David Bondurant stepped up as Life Member Affinity Chair (LMAG) Chair and Gene Freeman stepped up as Computer Society Chair. Both David and Gene had additional Region 5 duties resulting in increased collaborations working with sections outside of Region 5. John Reinert served as Treasurer proving guidance and continuity during this transition period.
During Feb 2023, Dr Santiago stepped down as Vice Chair after serving four years as Section Chair. During his last meeting, Dr Santiago expressed the need for developing future leaders since nearly all of the Section leaders were LMAG members. He then nominated David Bondurant as Section Chair and Gene Freeman as Section Vice Chair.
During Feb 2023, Dr Santiago recognized the contributions of the Section volunteers. Serving as a Certificate of Appreciation, a copy of John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success was given to the Section volunteers who contributed and perform leadership roles during COVID.
David Bondurant, Gene Freeman and Dr John Reinert received the IEEE Pikes Peak Section Achievement Award Plaques.
In addition, Dr Santiago nominated David Bondurant and Gene Freeman with nominations of awards for MGA awards from Region 5. Many thanks go to Russ Bogardus and Rich Painter for their endorsements in supporting the nominations.
During 2023, David Bondurant was recognized for the IEEE MGA Achievement Award, the only recipient from IEEE, as well being recognized for an LMAG award. During 2024, Gene Freeman was recognized for the Jim Leonard Award.
During Oct 2023, David Bondurant recognized Dr. John Santiago with the IEEE Pikes Peak Section Award Plaque. During Oct 2023, Dr John Reinert nominated Dr Santiago to be Region 5 Educational Activity Coordinator (REAC). After some reflection, Dr Santiago accepted the nomination and assumed position during Jan-Mar 2024.
